Garrison Mill Learning Garden helps young minds grow

School garden and trail create extension of the classroom in beautiful setting created for learning  

The Garrison Mill Learning Garden and Nature Trail give students peaceful learning places outside, between the gym, specials hallway and fifth-grade classes. Volunteers with the parent-led Garrison Mill Education Foundation maintain both spaces as outdoor classrooms for teachers and students.

For instance:

• The weather station on the roof overlooking the garden and the display in the specials hallway helps students learn how to gather and interpret important data.
• Planting boxes give opportunities to learn about soil and water flow.
• Vegetable boxes shows the importance of plants as food and bring to life the concept of photosynthesis.

This school year, the Foundation is working harder than ever calibrate the garden as a special place that gives young Greyhound learners a setting to explore learning standards in a hands-on way that moves beyond book knowledge. The Learning Garden is one example of how the Foundation brings Greyhound students real-world opportunities to experience STEAM - science, technology, engineering, arts, math. An intentionally integrated approach, STEAM helps students see the interconnected nature of the world.

 The Foundation Garden Crew schedules regular clean-up and maintenance days. Just let us know if you’d like to participate.

Teachers also have used our secluded trail just south of our main parking lot as a special place for fun outdoor time.

Our special outside resources are one example of how the nonprofit Foundation focuses on real-world STEAM experiences for our students.
