Why STEAM as a cause and mission for GMEF?
Giving Tuesday donations help us power enhanced STEAM experiences at Garrison Mill
Combine science, technology, engineering, arts and math, and what you get is an educational approach better known as STEAM, a way to see the world around you.
That approach sparks innovation. That means seeing in new ways how things are connected, leading to inspired discoveries, novel creative approaches, revolutionary products and fresh ideas for all of us.
STEAM – first coined as STEM by the U.S. National Science Foundation in 2001 – helps our Garrison Mill Greyhounds build their creative muscle, develop problem-solving skills and unleash critical thinking. Those attributes will be required to solve the biggest challenges ahead of us.
That’s why the volunteer, nonprofit, parent-led Garrison Mill Education Foundation (GMEF) focuses on bringing STEAM-related opportunities to our students.
And it’s why GMEF asks for your tax-deductible donations and other support during #GivingTuesday and throughout the year. Delivering STEAM experiences is the GMEF cause – and we need your help.
Garrison Mill is a STEM-certified school

GMEF’s work has helped Garrison Mill earn its distinction as a STEM-certified school in Cobb County. Not every Cobb County elementary school has a full-time STEM Lab and science teacher, but GMEF’s fundraising helped the school acquire both in 2009.
The integrated nature of STEAM approaches to education help students see the world in its interconnected way. That creates lifetime value for individual students while also creating future possibilities as our children grow up.
Ponder this: What new devices will they imagine and build? What new treatments will they create? What virtuoso performances will pour from their soul? What new ideas will they unleash to a delighted world?
How GMEF ignites dreams through STEAM
GMEF’s small part in igniting tomorrow’s possibilities includes:
- Funding robot purchases and maintenance, for example, for the STEM lab. This year, for the first time in a decade, microscopes in the Garrison Mill STEM lab were cleaned and refurbished.
- Supplementing salaries for certified science teachers over the years – support that has helped administrators pay for other school resources.
- The Garrison Mill Learning Garden and Nature Trail, which provide not only serene, safe and fun learning environments but also they engage students with the world of nature at their fingertips.
- Organizing FEAST Clubs (Foundation After School Time) to give students intellectual, emotional and physical outlets when the school day ends, though sessions like robotics, chess, music, drama, karate, basketball, yoga and more.
- Publix Math Night, where children of all ages experience math in the real-world context of goods and services in their neighborhood.
- STEAM-based field trips for each grade level this school year.
- New instruments for music class and micro grants for art class.

The GMEF mission of advocating for STEAM means creating experiences that enhance what our kids learn in the classroom.
