A special Garrison Mill garden grows young minds
#GivingTuesday donations help cultivate a love for science and the world around us
What happens when a choo-choo train collides on the track with fresh fruits and vegetables of all kinds?
Well, besides splat, you get a lesson in plant development.
Garrison Mill’s Learning Garden, along with the work of the Garrison Mill Education Foundation “Garden Guardians,” gained our school access to Cobb County Master Gardener Carolyn Sqrow.
Carolyn recently taught Greyhound second-graders about plant development, as imagined when a train runs over a variety of harvests.
From a squished tomato you get tomato sauce.
A run over avocado gives you guacamole.
Smooshed potatoes give you french fries.
Train wheels plus onions equals onion rings.
For Garrison Mill teachers interested in using the garden as a classroom, GMEF can help develop lessons plans or we can work with Carolyn on future classroom visits.

Gardens need nurturing from helping hands, donations, goodwill
The garden requires resources, like donations on #GivingTuesday to pay for upkeep through basic items like garden tools, fertilizer and soil.
Volunteers and equipment are other resources welcomed by a dedicated GMEF garden crew, which makes it a ready space to learn about science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Learning Garden in its summer glory

We have regular clean-up and maintenance days. Just let us know if you’d like to participate.
Our garden does what most gardens do best – grow plants. In the spring, be on the lookout for our annual plant sale. And throughout much of the year, we harvest and share the bounty with families in need.
And teachers have used our secluded trail just south of our main parking lot as a special place for fun outdoor time.
The Garrison Mill Elementary trail head and beautifully serene nature trail.

Our special outside resources are one of example of how the nonprofit, parent-led Garrison Mill Education Foundation focuses on STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art and math.
An intentionally integrated approach, STEAM helps students see the interconnected nature of the world.
Pursuit of STEAM experiences for our students is the primary mission of GMEF and the cause you support with your donations on #Giving Tuesday and throughout the year.
