Second helicopter teacher chosen – but kindness, grace, Greyhounds are real winners

Ms. Caudill wins spot on helicopter through voting, drawing, kindness

Third-grade teacher Kaila Caudill is the second helicopter teacher for the STEAM-a-Palooza cow drop and a chance to win a year’s worth of Chick-fil-A.

She won through voting, a random drawing and an act of selflessness.

Ms. Caudill is the second teacher on the helicopter for cow drop on Greyhound Night! She meets here with "Dr. Johnny STEAM."

In the end, the helicopter winner isn’t as important as knowing that kindness won the day.

Third graders fundraised more than any other grade level through Monday night, and they earned the honor of voting for a second helicopter teacher during Tuesday’s homeroom.

A separate student vote last week gave art teacher Rebecca Lopez a seat on the helicopter, where teachers will drop stuffie cows on Greyhound Night Friday, 6:30-8:30 pm.

Ninety third graders voted Tuesday. Caudill and STEM Lab teacher Sarah Whittle tied with 23 votes each in a field of nine helicopter hopefuls.

Whittle’s act of kindness

In random drawing in the library, GME assistant principal drew the name of Sarah Whittle to break the tie.

“Can I decline?” Sarah asked after being told the results of the drawing. “I know Kaila really, really wants to go. It’s OK. It really is. I have a lot of years to go.”

STEM Lab teacher Sarah Whittle showed grace in the helicopter voting for Greyhound Night Sept. 11, a culimination of STEAM-a-Palooza.

A few minutes later, Kaila was motioned out of her class to obtain information needed by the helicopter company.

“This is just in case, right?” Kaila asked.

Kaila was told what had unfolded, including Sarah declining the honor.

“Are there no givebacks? I would have said let Sarah go!” Kaila said.

Kindness was the theme of last year’s fundraiser by the Foundation. But kindness won the day Tuesday – making winners of every Greyhound at Garrison Mill.
