What is Garrison Mill STEAM?

Think about it as a spark for curiosity, creativity and imagination. It's for every Greyhound.

Your Garrison Mill Education Foundation provides hands-on opportunities for science, technology, engineering, arts and math - STEAM!

STEAM-a-Palooza is a celebration and fundraiser for STEAM. From Aug. 25 to Sept. 10, Greyhounds will get extra doses of STEAM in school. One special burst of STEAM is the chance to experience Star Lab, a portable planetarium on loan from the Cobb County School District.

Garrison Mill STEAM is also about STEM lab experiments and robots with Ms. Whittle. The Foundation funds STEM lab experiments as well as the acquisition and maintenance of robots used by all grade levels.

Kindergarteners and their parents probably remember during K Tours when they entered the STEM Lab, nervous in a new and unfamiliar place.

Kindly and gently, Ms. Whittle  encouraged them to sprinkle pepper into a bowl of water. Next, she had the new Greyhounds put a dab of dish soap in the water. It created a "wow" moment when the flakes scattered, a lesson in surface tension.

VISITING ARTIST

Garrison Mill STEAM also emerged when visiting artist Diane Quammon came to art specials and showed students at every grade level how she makes pottery with a wheel.

Students watched in rapt attention as she walked them step by step - and then let them put their hands in the clay mud and feel the gooey awesomeness for themselves. Did your Greyhound tell you about it?

A new version of that experience is coming this school year - all because of generous donations to the Garrison Mill Education Foundation.

GOT A SONG IN YOUR HEART?

And don't forget about those nights when your child assembled with others in their grade and sang their hearts out on the cafeteria stage, under the direction of music director Colleen Crotty.

Some student singers even advanced to the Garrison Mill Chorus and performed for family and peers - including their awe-inspiring moment singing the national anthem on Father's Day at Truist Park during an Atlanta Braves game.

Those are just a few of the moments of Garrison Mil STEAM in action. Also ahead: STEAM field trips for every grade, Publix Math Night, Science Fair, Science Olympiad - and more!

STEAM represents building blocks for the future, so the Foundation brings enrichment opportunities to students as often as we can. STEAM doesn’t tell students WHAT to think. It encourages them HOW to think.

Powered by STEAM:

  • Children see the world in multiple ways, inspiring innovative problem-solving
  • Students pursue curiosity
  • Children develop resilience as they try new things - some successful, some not
  • Building, sorting and creating help develop fine motor skills
  • Growing Greyhounds express themselves in imaginative ways

When young learners participate in hands-on STEAM experiences, they learn to adapt, create and lead in a technology-driven world. They think more critically and develop a lifelong love for learning.

Your tax-deductible donation helps the Foundation bring STEAM to Garrison Mill.

We appreciate your help.

Teamwork makes STEAM work.
